Can Pakistan avoid some unwanted records? Benedict Bermange has the stats for day three...
Some pointers for day three of the second Test at Edgbaston
This is the 1,535th Test to have been scheduled as a five-day match. Only 131 have ended on the third day or earlier.
So far, Pakistan have made six ducks in the match. They are three short of the Test record:
Team | Against | Venue | Season | Ducks |
Sri Lanka | India | Chandigarh | 1990/91 | 9 |
West Indies | Australia | Brisbane | 2000/01 | 9 |
Their record is eight against Australia at Sharjah in 2002 when they were bowled out for 59 and 53.
The last Pakistan batsman to follow up a first-innings duck with a second-innings century was Saeed Anwar who scored 188* against India at Kolkata in 1999.
Only four England bowlers have ever taken a 10-wicket match haul at Edgbaston:
Bowling | Name | Against | Season |
12-119 | Fred Trueman | West Indies | 1963 |
11-90 | Arthur Gilligan | South Africa | 1924 |
11-102 | Charlie Blythe | Australia | 1909 |
10-104 | Richard Ellison | Australia | 1985 |
James Anderson currently has match figures of 5-21. The fewest runs conceded by a bowler taking a haul of at least 10 wickets in a match in England is Tony Lock's 11-48 against West Indies at The Oval in 1957.
Here are the cheapest 10-wicket hauls in Test history:
Player | Runs | Wkts | Opposition | Ground | Year |
H Ironmonger (Aus) | 24 | 11 | South Africa | Melbourne | 1932 |
GD McGrath (Aus) | 27 | 10 | West Indies | Brisbane | 2000 |
J Briggs (Eng) | 28 | 15 | South Africa | Cape Town | 1889 |
In 1957 at Edgbaston, England trailed the West Indies by 288 on first innings but Peter May (285*) and Colin Cowdrey (154) added 411 for the fourth wicket to draw the match.
30/05/1957: England (186 & 583-4d) West Indies (474 & 72-7). Match Drawn.
So far, Pakistan have scored 91 runs for the loss of 11 wickets. They have just gone past the lowest number of runs in a match by a side bowled out twice:
Team | Runs | Result | Opposition | Ground | Year |
South Africa | 81 | Lost | Australia | Melbourne | 1932 |
South Africa | 90 | Lost | England | Cape Town | 1889 |
New Zealand | 96 | Lost | Australia | Wellington | 1946 |
They are still a little behind their worst effort:
Team | Runs | Result | Opposition | Ground | Year |
Pakistan | 112 | Lost | Australia | Sharjah | 2002 |
Pakistan | 208 | Lost | West Indies | Lahore | 1986 |
Pakistan | 222 | Lost | New Zealand | Hamilton | 2001 |
