Mainz suffered their first defeat of the Bundesliga season as they went down 2-0 at Borussia Monchengladbach.
Promoted club Mainz had picked up five points from their opening three games and would have gone top, temporarily at least, with victory over Monchengladbach.
However, Monchengladbach spoilt the party by taking the lead through Raul Bobadilla in the 29th minute.
Marco Reus then notched a second with just six minutes remaining to clinch three points for Monchengladbach.
The result lifts Monchengladbach to fourth ahead of the rest of the weekend's games, with Mainz back in seventh.
