A stunning finale at Ashton Gate saw Bristol City take the lead in stoppage time only for Leicester to hit back with an even later goal of their own.
David Clarkson must have thought he had claimed all three points for the Robins when he struck for Gary Johnson's side in the 91st minute.
But there was a further sting in the tale as Lloyd Dyer proved to be Leicester's man on the spot as he slammed home Michael Morrison's cross at the death.
Leicester had dominated much of the game up to the action-packed finale, with Paul Gallagher missing an open net with a header while Matt Oakley hit the post in the second period.
Bristol City were poor in the first half but improved after the break and fashioned chances of their own, with Danny Haynes firing into the side netting and Clarkson forcing Chris Weale into a fine save.
The result means Leicester missed the chance to put real daylight between themselves and play-off rivals Sheffield United, who lost 1-0 at third-placed Nottingham Forest. Bristol City, meanwhile, continue to struggle for form having won just one of their last 11 league games.
Foxes dominate
Leicester came into the game full of confidence after their 5-1 thumping of Scunthorpe on Saturday and they could have led within the opening minute.
Martyn Waghorn was sent clear but, after he managed to round Bristol City keeper Dean Gerken, he was denied by a fine clearance from Lewin Nyatanga, who put the ball out for a corner.
The Foxes continued to dominate and 10 minutes before the break, they should have led. But Gallagher, who scored a hat-trick on Saturday, directed a free header at Gerken when the goal was gaping.
Whatever Bristol City manager Gary Johnson said to his men at the interval had the desired effect as they created two good opportunities in the opening exchanges of the second period. First Clarkson broke into the penalty area and, with several men waiting for a pass, the striker could only find Leicester keeper Weale.

And then a minute later Haynes wasted a good chance when he found himself in space but could only put his effort into the side netting.
But Leicester soon found their feet and began to create chances and, after Waghorn dragged a shot wide, Nigel Pearson's men were within inches of going ahead when Oakley was denied by the post after good work from Dyer.
The game went up a gear in the final 15 minutes as both sides traded chances. City's Clarkson was denied by a fine save by Weale's feet before Leicester went close when Andy King's effort grazed the bar.
Then the hosts looked to have won it when Clarkson drove home after good work by Chris Iwelumo, but the dust had barely settled before Dyer responded for the Foxes, who took a deserved point.
