Todorov earns draw for Charlton

Charlton needed a late goal from Svetoslav Todorov to claim a draw with Burnley at The Valley. The Bulgarian headed home with just 14 minutes remaining to salvage a point for the home side. Burnley had taken the lead in the first-half when Steve Thompson grabbed the opener. Beleaguered Charlton lost to Cardiff last weekend and Bristol City on Tuesday, before losing a potential multi-million pound windfall on Thursday when a proposed takeover fell through. While the Addicks are in the doldrums, Burnley are by contrast up with the early-season pace-setters and were brimming with confidence. They attacked their jittery hosts from the off and had the ball in the net after just eight minutes, only to be denied by a controversial decision. Martin Paterson ran through and fired past Nicky Weaver despite being flagged offside. Referee Rob Shoebridge initially gave the goal to furious protests from the hosts, but then changed his mind after consulting with his fellow official. Cue more protests, this time from the Clarets who felt the ball had come off Charlton defender Yassin Moutaouakil on its way through to Paterson.

Thompson goal

However, the visitors only had to wait a further five minutes to take the lead. The hosts failed to clear a corner and busy midfielder Gudjonsson's shot from outside the box flew through a crowded goalmouth and was diverted past Weaver by the lurking Thompson. The ineffective Izale McLeod, just back from a cruciate knee ligament injury, was replaced by Todorov at the break. Darren Ambrose drew ironic applause from all round the ground with a header which flew straight at Brian Jensen, and Varney also had a header saved. But the home side were at least showing some fight, and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Grant Basey whipped in a free-kick and Todorov thumped his header past the Clarets keeper. It was the Bulgarian's first goal since September 2007 after a year wrecked by a serious knee injury. Charlton breathed a sigh of relief when Gudjonsson rattled the crossbar with a fierce drive. And with the clock ticking down, Varney blew a gilt-edged chance to win the game when he rounded Jensen and ran towards an empty net, only to take an extra touch which allowed Duff to recover and somehow keep out his shot.
