Hartlepool put on an impressive attacking display to stun much-fancied Colchester 4-2 at Victoria Park.
James Brown scored two goals in a minute (13 & 14) to put Pools firmly in command.
In the 65th minute Hartlepool scored again when Gary Liddle fed Willie Boland and the midfielder curled a superb 25-yard shot just inside the post.
They made it four in the 76th minute when Ritchie Jones marked his debut by cutting inside from the right and blasting a rising shot into the roof of the net.
However, Steve Gillespie cut the gap from the spot after Boland was adjudged to have handled, and in added time Gillespie got his second with a close-range header.
