Ipswich move to within point of play-offs

Danny Haynes' first-half goal fired Ipswich to within a point of the play-off places with victory over Norwich in the East Anglia derby. Haynes latched onto a clinical through-ball from the returning Pablo Counago to slot a low shot through the legs of the advancing Andy Marshall in the 40th minute. Norwich had stunned the Portman Road crowd by taking an early lead as they looked to banish any lingering relegation fears. Ched Evans was allowed to advance down the right towards the Town box before unleashing a low 25-yard effort which flew beyond the despairing dive of Stephen Bywater and into the far corner of the net. But Ipswich were not behind for long, and it was Counago and Haynes who combined to help restore parity for Jim Magilton's side in the 13th minute.

Impressive

Counago, returning from a three-match ban, split the Norwich defence and Haynes' cross-shot was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Alex Pearce. Ipswich suffered an injury blow when striker Shefki Kuqi, who was making his return after a hamstring injury, limped out of the action in the 36th minute with his leg heavily strapped. But, with the impressive Counago pulling the strings, the home side went in front before the interval, and should have increased their lead after the break. Haynes, Tommy Miller and Jonathan Walters all went close to adding a third in the second period as the Tractor Boys dominated without finding a way through. The defeat for Norwich means Glenn Roeder's side still have work to do to be absolutely sure of retaining their Championship status for another season.
