Norwood the hero for NI

A last-gasp Oliver Norwood free-kick earned Northern Ireland U21s a 1-1 draw with Germany.

Dramatic free-kick earns a share of the spoils

A last-gasp Oliver Norwood free-kick earned Northern Ireland Under 21s a 1-1 draw with Germany at The Oval in their European Championship qualifier. Northern Ireland have not enjoyed the best of campaigns, but Manchester United midfielder Norwood struck in injury time to earn a point. Germany, who defeated England in the final of the 2009 European Championship, seemed set to record a win after Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting struck in the 89th minute. Norwood, though, curled a brilliant equaliser from the edge of the box to ensure Northern Ireland did not suffer a fourth successive defeat in their qualifying campaign. A minute's silence was held before kick-off as a mark of respect to Robert Enke, following the death of the Hannover goalkeeper this week. A group of German fans held up a placard which read: "Robert R.I.P." The match was then played in an open fashion, with Craig Cathcart and Corry Evans wasting chances for the home side. Germany also had opportunities and Thomas Muller got into good positions but saw one effort deflected to safety by Ryan McGivern and another blocked by Lee Hodson.
