Veteran keeper opts for fresh start in New Zealand

Former Millwall and Liverpool goalkeeper Tony Warner has been snapped up by Hyundai A League outfit Wellington Phoenix. The veteran shot-stopper has signed on a free transfer from Tranmere Rovers, bringing to an end a long career in British football. Warner, 37, signed his first professional contract at boyhood club Liverpool and has since played for 15 other teams across the Premier League, the Football League and the SPL. Having started in 25 matches for Tranmere last season, the League One club were hopeful of extending Warner's contract. However the journeyman keeper has finalised his move to Wellington Phoenix, amid speculation he was a target for Blackburn Rovers.

Experience

Riki Herbert, coach of the New Zealand based outfit, has enthused about Warner's wealth of experience and believes that his arrival will bring some much needed competition between the sticks for current Phoenix No.1 Mark Paston. "One of the key ingredients that makes a club successful is competition for places," said Herbert. "This season we are going to have some healthy battles for first-team spots throughout the team. "It will be good for Mark to have someone so experienced to work with in training as well as keep him on his toes. "Mark is going really well now that he is over that bad run of injuries and the competition from Tony will do him no harm."
