Newcastle are to decide whether to make an improved contract offer to James Tavernier after the young defender made it clear he wants his future to be at St James' Park.
The 20-year-old was drafted into Alan Pardew's first team at the end of last season after spells on loan at Carlisle, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons.
Tavernier's current deal expires this summer and, while he has been offered a new deal, he has yet to sign extended terms.
Despite that, the defender insists he is keen to remain at St James' Park and wants to prove his worth.
"I want to stay at Newcastle - it's obviously a massive club," Tavernier told
The Journal.
"At the moment it's between the club, myself and my agent, but I want to be here.
"My main aim is to have a really good pre-season and make sure the manager knows that I'm playing well and hopefully I can keep myself in his thinking for next season.
"Obviously there's going to be more games next season with the Europa League and hopefully that means more chances for all of us in the squad."
