Abbott spurs Gillespie on

Carlisle manager Greg Abbott wants young goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to challenge for the club's number one spot next season.

The 20-year-old has progressed through the youth ranks at Brunton Park and signed a new two-year deal on Friday, with Abbott now demanding he steps up and rivals Adam Collin for the gloves. Abbott told the club's official website: "We think a lot of Mark, he's done ever so well since progressing from the youth team two years ago and next season is going to be a big one for him. "We've got a bit of a gameplan for him and we really want him to push for a starting place now. In pre-season he will be given an opportunity to challenge Adam and we'll see where he's at." Workington goalkeeper Aaran Taylor will also spend a week training with Carlisle this summer, but Abbott cannot guarantee a contract.
