Swiss winger arrives on a free transfer

Schalke have signed winger Tranquillo Barnetta on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga side have handed the Switzerland international a three-year deal after his contract with Leverkusen expired. Leverkusen wanted to retain the services of Barnetta but their final attempt to do so ended in failure, with Schalke making the most of the situation. The Royal Blues' general manager Horst Heldt is overjoyed to have secured the signature of the 27-year-old and is confident that he will prove to be a success at the Veltins Arena. "We are extremely pleased that Tranquillo (Barnetta) has opted to accept our contract proposal," he enthused on Schalke's official website. "He is a quality player and is able to feature in various roles on the pitch. "He has already shown that during his days with Bayer Leverkusen as well as with the Switzerland national team. "It's a great move for our club that we have been able to sign him on a Bosman transfer."
