Russia will announce a new coach next week after sports minister Vitaly Mutko described talks with former England boss Fabio Capello as 'productive'.
The 66-year-old Italian has been tipped for the job vacated by Dutchman Dick Advocaat, who has taken over at PSV Eindhoven, with reports in the Russian media claiming he is set to sign a two-year deal.
Capello arrived in Moscow on Thursday for talks with top Russian Football Union (RFU) officials and Mutko revealed they had gone well.
"I think we had good impressions on each other. Our talks will continue," said the former Russian soccer chief, who is also a member of FIFA's executive board.
"Because of a limited time frame I think we will name a new coach early next week, give or take a few days to complete all the paperwork."
The post would mark Capello's first managerial role since he quit as England boss in February.
Should he be successful, he will be tasked with guiding the squad into the 2014 World Cup after a disappointing Euro 2012.
Candidates
Acting RFU chief Nikita Simonyan said: "I think Capello is genuinely interested in working in Russia.
"He also is willing to live in Russia full time, not just come here for a few days each month. It says a lot about his intentions to work here."
Capello has coached Italian clubs AC Milan, Roma, Juventus and Spanish giants Real Madrid, winning domestic titles with each of the clubs, before becoming England manager in 2007.
Under the boss, England qualified for Euro 2012 before the Italian resigned after falling out with Football Association chiefs.
Recently sacked Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp had been linked with the Russia job but said earlier this week he had not been contacted over the role.
