Sweden boss admits England were 'more effective' in Kiev

Erik Hamren was left scratching his head after Sweden were knocked out of Euro 2012 at the group stages following a 3-2 defeat by England. In a dramatic encounter in Kiev, the Three Lions recorded a first competitive win in their history over their Scandinavian bogey team to move to within a point of the quarter-finals. But it had looked like a different scenario in the early stages of the second half when an Olof Mellberg brace cancelled out Andy Carroll's first-half header. Sweden looked good for three points, however, a brilliant substitute cameo from Theo Walcott saw the Arsenal man score an equaliser before setting up Danny Welbeck's winner.

Proud

And having seen his team also open their campaign with a surprise loss to co-hosts Ukraine, Hamren said: "The first expression is, I'm really disappointed. "We have played, in my opinion, two really good halves. One, OK. One, bad. And we're here with zero points. "We played a good game. I'm really proud of the players. We showed the mentality and the attitude I wanted to see." Sweden will now go into their final Group D game against France on Tuesday with only pride to play for following the defeat by England. And asked what the difference was between Roy Hodgson's side and Sweden, Hamren said: "They were much more effective than we were."
