Andy Liddell gave the hosts the lead from the spot after Darren Byfield was pulled back by visiting skipper Tamika Mkandawire.
The 35-year-old struck after 33 minutes when his powerful penalty was fired past the outstretched hand of Orient goalkeeper Glenn Morris.
Former Oldham striker Sam Parkin was a constant danger for the visitors and had a shot cleared off the line midway through the first half before being denied by the hosts goalkeeper Greg Fleming five minutes before the break.
Orient were back on level terms with 18 minutes to play after being awarded a penalty themselves. Fleming was adjudged to have brought down Ryan Jarvis but he kept out Jason Demetriou's spot-kick.
However, the Orient midfielder pounced on the rebound to hammer the ball into the net and salvage a point for the O's.
