Shrewsbury emerged as 2-0 winners in a game marred by a serious head injury to Bradford defender Thomas Moncur who went to hospital after a clash with team-mate Graham Lee.
The pair collided in the opening four minutes of the match and as they lay motionless on the pitch, Grant Holt hit the loose ball against Rhys Evans' legs and Ben Davies controversially slotted home from 12-yards.
Moncur then suddenly collapsed 13 minutes later and was treated for eight minutes by medics before being carried off on a stretcher.
The home side dominated and went close to extending their advantage through Holt, who hit the post, before on-loan midfielder Sean Thornton fired the ball over from five-yards.
Shrewsbury added a further goal late in second-half injury time when Richard Walker scored from close range after good work by Holt.
