Skipper Marc Richards scored an injury-time winner in Port Vale's 2-1 victory at Shrewsbury.
The game ended in dramatic style with Shrewsbury substitute Michael Symes appearing to have saved a point with a deflected shot a minute from normal time, after Louis Dodds had scored the opener on 19 minutes.
Lee Collins was then sent off for the visitors in the 92nd minute, but as Shrewsbury pressed hard for a winner a fine breakaway move saw Richards break clear to score.
The hosts were without suspended leading scorer Grant Holt and were a shadow of the side that has twice scored seven goals this season.
They were unable to cope with the visitor's five-man midfield and their aggressive tackling which brought Vale five bookings.
Dave Hibbert, playing against his former club, and Richard Walker, who was in for Holt, were ineffective up front and Joe Anyon did not have a serious save to make in the visitor's goal.
