Addicks pile misery on Saints

Charlton won the battle of the bottom two as they claimed a thrilling 3-2 success at Southampton.

Bad week for Southampton ends with 3-2 defeat

Charlton won the battle of the bottom two as they claimed a thrilling 3-2 success at Southampton. Southampton, whose financial worries increased this week, fell behind to Jonjo Shelvey's goal after just seven minutes. David McGoldrick levelled for Saints ten minutes later but Therry Racon and Nick Bailey struck in the second half to give the Addicks a cushion. And Charlton held on to claim only their second away win of the season despite a late goal from Bradley Wright-Phillips. Tresor Kandol shot wide early on before Shelvey put the Addicks in front, racing on to goalkeeper Robert Elliot's kick down field and finishing from 12 yards. Charlton had a number of half chances to double their tally before Saints equalised when McGoldrick drilled in from the edge of the area. Mark Hudson headed Bailey's cross wide before Kandol was brought down by Jan Paul Saeijs for a penalty. The on-loan Leeds striker failed to add to his tally of two Charlton goals as Kelvin Davis made a fine top-corner save. Andrew Surman and McGoldrick each had headers saved by Elliot before Kandol headed over as the half ended level.

Frustrated

Zheng Zhi and Kandol each failed to test Davies early in the second period. Marek Saganowski had a shot saved by Elliot before Davies again frustrated Kandol. Charlton did restore their lead when Racon hit a right-foot shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Surman forced Elliot to save before Bailey finished from six yards after 69 minutes. Saganowski again shot wide and McGoldrick had an effort held by Elliot before Southampton pulled a goal back with six minutes remaining. Substitute Wright-Phillips curled in a right-foot effort from the edge of the box for his fourth goal of the season and first since December. Chris Perry and McGoldrick went close and Jason Euell shot over but Southampton could not find a leveller to remain one place above Charlton at the foot of the standings.
