Winger scores only goal as Barnsley reach fifth round

Jamal Campbell-Ryce shot down his former club as Barnsley beat Southend United 1-0 in the FA Cup fourth round. The winger left Roots Hall for Barnsley before the close of last summer's transfer window, but returned to Southend to devastating effect. He scored the only goal of a keenly-fought cup tie on 22 minutes when he turned and cut in from the left before whipping a tremendous shot into the far corner of the net. Barnsley could have doubled the lead just four minutes later, but Southend keeper Darryl Flahavan was alert to keep out Dennis Souza's header. Southend, who beat the Tykes in a third-round replay last season, should have been level just before half-time, but Gary Hooper shot straight at Heinz Muller from a good position. Muller continued to frustrate the home side after the restart as the German keeper denied Tommy Black from 18 yards. Alan McCormack dragged wide on the hour as Southend showed signs of a possible comeback. Muller then showed incredible athleticism to pull off two saves in barely 20 seconds. He first turned behind Black's rasping 12-yard drive and from the resulting Steven Hammell corner was on hand to keep out Adam Barrett's header. Both teams had chances in the closing stages, but Barnsley hung on to become the first team into the draw for the fifth round.
