Paul Buckle's in-form Torquay overtook Macclesfield thanks to skipper Nicky Wroe's 86th minute strike in a 1-0 win.
Midfielder Wroe's 13th goal of the season maintained United's six match unbeaten April record, which has included five wins.
United had the better chances and forced the pace, signalled by target man Rendell forcing a save off visiting keeper Jon Brain after two minutes.
Brain continued to thwart United in the second half, denying Scott Rendell in the 48th minute with another superb stop after defender Paul Morgan failed to clear Chris Zebroski's dangerous cross.
Chris Zebroski beat Brain in the 68th minute but his header bounced inches wide, with the keeper committed.
However with four minutes remaining Zebroski played the ball into Wroe and his 25-yard strike gave Brain no chance. Rendell also hit the post late on as Torquay held on for the points.
