Wolfsburg lifted themselves out of the relegation play-off place thanks to a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen.

Wiese's error gives priceless three points in relegation scrap

Wolfsburg lifted themselves out of the Bundesliga relegation play-off place thanks to Sascha Reither's first-half goal at Werder Bremen. The full-back benefited from goalkeeper Tim Wiese's error to earn his side a potentially priceless three points which lift them to 14th, ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt and Cologne. In a low-key opening, Wolfsburg's Mario Mandzukic poked Grafite's cross wide of the near post. Visiting goalkeeper Diego Benaglio then fumbled Torsten Frings' free-kick after it bounced awkwardly through the legs of defender Arne Friedrich. But opposite number Wiese was culpable as Wolfsburg struck in the 21st minute. He took his eyes off Mandzukic's cross and failed to hold Cicero's tame follow-up, allowing Reither to tap in only his second goal of the season.

    Fizzed

Per Mertesacker made a vital clearance as Grafite looked to connect with Mandzukic's cross, but the ensuing counter-attack ended with Frings blazing wildly wide - not for the first time. The second half also started slowly, Grafite fizzed a left-foot snap-shot wide from 20 yards - but the Brazilian was then booked for challenging with a high foot after a spell of pinball in the Bremen box. Claudio Pizarro lashed wide at the other end before Bremen, searching for inspiration, introduced Aaron Hunt and Dominik Schmidt for Wesley and Philipp Bargfrede. Per Mertesacker was frustrated after being booked following an innocuous tangle with Grafite, before Marcel Schafer missed a golden chance to kill the game off. Mandzukic hooked a ball back across the box and Schafer, in yards of space, headed across the face of goal with Wiese hopelessly exposed. Clemens Fritz shot over at the other end and Friedrich stretched well to cut out Marko Marin's driven cross. Reither lofted an effort over the bar with Wiese out of his goal and Benaglio had to be sharp at the other end to palm away Mikael Silvestre's free-kick as Marin closed in, ensuring the spoils for the visitors.
