Westwood, still searching for his first major victory, was going along nicely at six under par for the tournament but gave back five shots over the last 11 holes including a double bogey-bogey finish.
A round of 73 leaves him six behind clubhouse leader Adam Scott but he remains hopeful heading into the weekend.
"I played pretty well," he said. "The course was playing really long, the par-four 17th was unreachable, and I was just ticking along before getting kicked where it hurts on the last two holes.
"I would like to have finished par, par but I am in red figures going into the weekend and still have a chance."
Fellow Englishman Ian Poulter rescued his round with closing birdies but had been looking like missing the cut after a double bogey at the 18th - his ninth.
Nevertheless a 71 leaves him a long way off the pace in his quest for a first major victory.
There was no such luck for Luke Donald, who could find just a solitary birdie on Friday and a 74 is set to leave him at least one shot over the cut line on five over par.
