The world No 1 started the day on one-over-par and in need of a low round to get into contention as he searches for a first major victory since 2008.
However, two early bogeys set the tone for the day to leave Woods amongst the also-rans once more.
"Not joyous, that's for sure," he reflected on the first three rounds. "It's just one of those weeks where I didn't quite hit it well enough and didn't make enough putts. That's golf. We don't play well every week."
He denied he was trying too hard in majors, adding: "As far as that's concerned, no.
"As far as overall game plan and the way I'm playing, I've been there in enough of these things where I've been right there in the back nine on Sunday with a chance."
