The 31-year-old from California closed with two birdies in the final four holes for a one-under-par total of 212, putting him in with a great chance of lifting the Claret Jug after conditions took their toll of the leaders.
He will now play in the final group on Sunday, alongside two-shot leader Lee Westwood.
Mahan said: "Obviously the course is difficult. But I hit a lot of good quality shots and the putter was very strong. It was a total team effort by my game today, for sure."
Mahan remains famous for his vital fluffed chip shot in the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, but he insisted that the incident is not something he is dwelling on.
"I don't need any redemption or anything like that. I don't play golf for revenge or to make up for anything.
"I'm playing because I really like to play, and it's the ultimate challenge playing major golf.
"I feel comfortable with my game and excited about the opportunity and just have to go out there and trust it and let it happen."
He added that the surroundings this week remind him of another major championship.
"I hope they don't take it the wrong way, but it is very U.S. Open-ish to me.
"Just the way it looked, with all the fairways having definition. Some of the British Opens, you don't know where to hit it."
