Paula Radcliffe denies doping and slams 'trial by media'

Paula Radcliffe has called for an end to her "trial by media".

The marathon world record holder this week mounted a vigorous defence of her record after claiming she had been implicated by MPs discussing recent doping allegations.

Radcliffe was not mentioned by name at a meeting of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee to discuss Sunday Times report on the leaked blood data of thousands of athletes.

But Great Britain's 2005 world champion felt a question asked by the Committee chair Jesse Norman had left her vulnerable, and in a new interview with Sky News on Wednesday, she said she would be prepared to go to the Houses of Parliament to defend her reputation.

Asked if she would face the Committee, she said: "Yes, but I think it's possibly gone beyond that now.

"This database that's circulating out there shouldn't be commented on without the full context. It needs to be handed back, this needs to be a truce.

"People need to sit down and openly look at all of this data with the relevant context and stop threatening people."

Radcliffe also told Sky News' Paul Kelso she would not be silenced in the face of "too much blackmail, too much lying going on and too many untruths being told".

And she also offered to work with Lord Coe, the new head of the athletics' world governing body the IAAF, in preaching an anti-doping message she was outspoken in spreading throughout her competition days.

"Absolutely," she said. "It's something that I've always spoken about. I've had these strong anti-doping views throughout my career, and going forward I now have more time to dedicate."

In the meantime, Radcliffe has received the backing of her former physio Gerard Hartmann, who told The Guardian: "I would bet my house - in fact everything I have - that Paula Radcliffe never crossed the line during her career. That she never took banned performance-enhancing drugs.

"That she became the greatest female marathon runner in the world through incredible hard work, genetics and a relentless drive to be the best. And if anyone had a bible to hand, I would swear on my life she was clean. That is how confident I am about Paula.

"I know that the last 48 hours has been like putting a dagger through her both ways. But I repeat what I said before. She is clean. She has always been clean. And she is determined to prove it."
