Sassuolo's first foray into Serie A football ended in defeat to Torino at the Stadio Olimpico.

Sassuolo's first foray into Serie A football ended in defeat to Torino as the newcomers paid the price for some poor finishing at the Stadio Olimpico. The Serie B champions gave a good account of themselves in their season opener, but their failure to find the target cost them dearly as they succumbed to goals from Matteo Brighi and Alessio Cerci. Stage fright did not appear to be a problem for the visitors in the early stages with Jasmin Kurtic's 30-yard drive causing a moment of concern for Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli. Ciro Immobile responded for the home side after 13 minutes with a shot of his own from distance, but it failed to trouble Sassuolo goalkeeper Antonio Rosati. Immobile's next effort created a little more work for Rosati, however, who pulled off a fine save to turn away a shot from near the penalty spot. Padelli also had to remain alert at the other end thanks to Gaetano Masucci's low strike after 36 minutes before Simone Zaza further warmed the palms of the goalkeeper with his testing drive. But it was the home fans who were celebrating five minutes before the interval when Immobile teed up Brighi with the perfect cross to slot the ball into the bottom left corner. Sassuolo came out fighting after the break with Zaza firing over from distance before Francesco Magnanelli got closer to the mark with his right foot. Magnanelli tried his luck again on the hour with a free-kick which he scooped over the bar and they were made to pay eight minutes later with Cerci finding room on the edge of the area before curling in a lovely left-footed effort for Torino's second. Sassuolo continued to push forward in a bid to salvage something from the match, but Emanuele Terranova was also wasteful in front of goal while one last-ditch attempt from Karim Laribi was punched away by an agile Padelli.
