La Rochelle moved back to the top of Amlin Challenge Cup Pool Five after claiming a 28-17 win over French rivals Agen on Thursday night.
Les Maritimes trailed 14-13 at half-time but raced away after the interval to virtually assure themselves of a place in the quarter-finals.
The result means that Gloucester must beat Rovigo on Saturday and then hope that La Rochelle suffer an unlikely defeat to the Italians next week to sneak through to knock-out stages.
The visitors opened the scoring at Stade Armandie through a Thomas Combezou try but Agen hit back five minutes later as Brice Mach touched down, while Saimoni Vaka crossed the try-line just before half-time to give the hosts the advantage.
But Stephane Clement came off the bench to score two tries for the visitors - both in the final ten minutes - and secure victory for La Rochelle against the club with whom they are in a relegation battle in the Top 14.
